The East of Culture

The East of Culture is a new form of cultural cooperation between cities of Eastern Poland and countries of the Eastern Partnership.

It is the first time that the three cities: Białystok, Lublin and Rzeszów are discovering such large scale opportunities for joint endeavours to be taken by various groups in order to share cultural ideas across the borders, to facilitate artistic and cultural exchange, as well as ensure mobility of artists and their works. The project was made possible by the involvement of creative groups and local governments of Eastern Poland, as well as the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the National Centre for Culture.

East of Culture expands the idea of European Cultural Zone, the project initiated in 2011-2012 in connection with EURO 2012 and implemented in Rzeszów and in 2012 in Lublin, as well.

The East of Culture is a joint effort of all regions in Eastern Poland to establish the Eastern Partnership as a cultural project. Based on social and cultural potential it aims at developing new competences, for instance in the area of inter-cultural dialogue, new media as well as for animating and managing “cross-border” projects. The mission assumed by the East of Culture is the growth of the cities through cultural cooperation with the Eastern Partnership countries and by enhancing the cooperation between the cities of Eastern Poland in order to create joint and daring long-term cultural programs. The project was made possible by the involvement of creative groups and local governments of Eastern Poland, as well as the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the National Centre for Culture.

Festivals of the East of Culture Project

The first joint undertaking by the three cities in Eastern Poland under the East of Culture Project involve organization of three festivals: in Rzeszów – European Cultural Zone in the end of June, in Białystok – Another Dimension – Neighbours scheduled for the end of September, and in Lublin festival Integrations-Mediations accompanying the Congress entitled Culture for the Eastern Partnership, at the beginning of October.

The artistic program of the East of Culture Project will be based mainly on initiatives taken by local cultural operators and artists, exchange of artistic projects between the cities as well as joint projects carried out with artists of the Eastern Partnership.

The cooperation with the countries of the Eastern Partnership is designed to show their potential and to inspire participants of the festivals, since culture of these countries is still unknown and is not popular in Poland. The Project will be carried out in three stages:

28-30 June 2013, Rzeszów – European Cultural Zone
25-29 September 2013, Białystok – Another Dimensions – Neighbours
1-6 October 2013, Lublin – Integrations-Mediations
